Scope and Motivation

Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology (DLT) that uses state-of-the-art cryptographic artifacts that are chained in data structures, creating an immutable, trusted, transparent, and distributed data ledger. Blockchain is the pillar of today’s modern computing networking, enabled by a consensus mechanism that validates and authorizes all participants, and data transactions. Blockchain creates a trusted layer amount several parties, enabling decentralized marketplaces, and computation platform.

Among several applications blockchain can enable, one most recent application stands out, as a potential to build a number of blockchain-enabled transactive energy platforms for a host of applications in the emerging electric industry landscape. These include applications including peer-to-peer, peer-to-market, and market-to-market transactions for Energy and related products such as Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), and a variety of products and services needed for grid reliability and resilience (such as reserves, energy balancing, and frequency regulation, to name a few). The Blockchain infrastructure offers among others, data security, resilience, and lean processes for information exchange in different phases of these transactions, from tenders, to market-clearing, delivery verification, and settlements. Academic research is opening new arenas in this directions and helping industrial efforts including proof-of-concept trials, pilots, and actual implementations.

This IEEE Future of Blockchain in Energy & Utilities is a dual-track event addressing the latest academic research and the industry activities in this subject. It is organized to cover the main topics and intersection of blockchain and energy. In addition to the dual-track symposium, the IEEE Blockchain Transactive Energy (BCTE) initiative, is sponsoring a 2-days Hackathon to promote the blockchain in transactive energy field.

The symposium seeks innovative proposals to cover these topics from the industry, government, and academia, to foster discussions and collaboration in this new and emerging field.

Topics of Interest

We invite submissions on a wide range of research topics, spanning both theoretical and systems research, including results from industry and academic/industrial collaborations, related but not restricted to the following topics:
